Bonanzle Wins @ Seattle 2.0

Seattle 2.0 was created in 2007 with one goal in mind: To help tech entrepreneurs build great companies.

Seattle 2.0 is made up of entrepreneurs, investors, advisors, consultants and members of a healthy and ever-growing startup community around Seattle.

Each year they hold a conference and award several businesses that fit into the various categories Seattle 2.0 have designated. The conference and awards help connect investors and businesses. The 2010 event was the second of it's kind.

Bonanzle was nominated as the Best Bootstrapped Startup at the Seattle 2.0 Awards. Last night, they won the award for that category.

Congratulations Bonanzle!

Bonanzle Rocks! Investors Drop $1 Million For Advancement Of The Site

Bonanzle has a lot to be proud of and excited about these days. They have locked in $1 million from some of the top investors in the Seattle, Wa. area.

Way to go Bonanzle!!

Here is what Bonanzle's founder and CEO, Bill Harding has to say:

Why get funded? And why now?

We couldn't be happier about finally having the resources to buy a Bonanzle rocket ship. Mark has already dibsed first trip to Mars. For "normal" startups, raising money from investors is usually one of the first matters to get taken care of. If not for the strong support of our community and dear old Google search, we would have needed to do this a year ago. But because of Bonanzle's fast-spreading reputation (and thus sales), we have been able to bide our time and wait until we saw a deal that was simply too good to pass up.

This is that deal. Our group of investors is comprised of many of Seattle's most respected entrepeneurs and investors -- people who understand the significance of what we've built, what our community means to the site, and who agree with the service-first mantra that is going to help us continue to grow rapidly for years to come.

We feel like we owe this to our sellers. So many Bonanzle users have spent countless hours setting up their booths, marketing their items on Facebook, Twitter, and elsewhere, and have done all they can to build a successful business on Bonanzle. For the people who have stuck with us as we've grown, we want to prove our commitment to doing everything in our power to ensure that the time spent booth building is rewarded with a user experience that continues to improve, and continues to deliver an ever-growing number of buyers over time.

What changes?

The biggest change coming will be the increased speed at which we can fix bugs and create a more polished user experience. To this point, Bonanzle has been built with a very small development team. As our number of buyers continues to grow month after month, our obligation to tending the community grows, and the amount of time available to add meaningful improvements shrinks. If there's one thing we will never be OK with, it's stagnation. Though it will take some time to put the right team in place, within the next few months, we expect that our speed of evolution will become even faster than it had been back in the glory days of 2k9.

Another personal pet peeve of mine over the last year has been how little time we've had to focus test our buying and selling experiences. With our new resources, one of my first priorities will be to put in place a sustainable plan to ensure that stuff works the way that real users expect it to, not just the way we think it probably ought to work at the time its added.

What doesn't change?

This is probably the equally important, if not more important, question to many of our existing users.

First of all, Mark and I will continue to perform the same roles we have had. That is, Mark will continue to ensure that we provide the best support experience of any marketplace online, and I'll continue to work toward creating a fast and simple site that is fun to use.

Bonanzle will remain a product-driven company, as opposed to a marketing-driven company. It's true that we are treading toward more advertising through Adwords and otherwise, and we will continue to incrementally spend on a limited amount of advertising. But fundamentally, it is our belief that $1 spent on building a better site will provide more sustained value than $1 buying a single customer, and then sending that customer into a mediocre experience. During this crucial phase of our growth, it is imperative that we focus on what makes the Bonanzle experience unique, and polish it like crazy until it is so wonderful it makes new users weep in joyful triumph. (<-- use of hyperbole, but you get the idea).

Oh, and for all the paranoiacs in the crowd, I would be remiss not to state the obvious: that fees here are obviously not changing (they're locked in, remember?)

What is Bonanzle doing next?

1. Hiring (say, you wouldn't happen to know any good programmers, designers, or product/ui specialists, would you?)

2. Everything else. Where "everything else" includes: working to get our sellers more detailed metrics about their item visitors and sales; making it easier to register and chat on the site if you don't have an account; investigating means by which to make it easier for new visitors to trust Bonanzle and our sellers; building ways to make category-specific shopping experience interesting; and countless other surprises of the pleasant sort.

------
Bonanzle has really shown how they are not just a fly by night company and the fact that investors are willing to drop their money on the site says a lot for the potential of the site. It looks like there is a very bright future ahead!

Congratulations to Bonanzle, Bill Harding and the rest of the staff!

Bonanzle Brand Protection Program

Bonanzle has a program that few know about. It is like the eBay Vero program. I found out about it when I was reporting some bootleg DVD's.

While Bonanzle would not give a list of participants, we do know the following are involved:

Burberry

Chanel

Gibson Guitar Corporation

The Indian Arts & Crafts Board

Warner Brothers Entertainment, Inc.

There are likely more but we didn't put too much time into snooping around.

When emailing with Mark Dorsey, he gave me permission to print the following information that is sent to trademark owners:

Our goal is to assist you in protecting your brand and protecting consumers from inadvertently purchasing an item that is a replica or counterfeit. Our tools will allow you to set up alerts so that you will be notified each time an item with your selected key words is listed. You will be provided a link to the item(s) and have the option to report and remove these items. The offender will receive an email notifying them of the action along with a link back to your profile page where they can learn why their item was removed. It is important that you include a means of contact on your "about me" page should the seller have additional questions. This could be in the form on an email address, website or 800 number.

Step one: Register (Free) an account at Bonanzle and populate your "About Me" page.
Once you have registered and you are logged into your account you will go to your My Bonanzle > My Profile page and populate your "About Me" profile. Please also upload a logo to your profile image.

Step two: Set up Saved Item Search (Alerts)
Our system will allow you to set alerts on key terms often used in the listings of replica/counterfeit items. You will be emailed these alerts to your email address you have registered with Bonanzle. There is no limit to the amount of alerts you can set up. To set up alerts, go to your My Bonanzle > Buying Activity > Saved Item Search > Create a new Saved Item Search. You will have the option to set your alert up and also to narrow down your alerts using a filter provided. When you have completed creating the alert click on "Create."

Step three: Reporting and removing offending items
When you locate an item that infringes on your brand, you will see an "Actions" link towards the bottom of the description. Clicking on this link will open up a list of actions to perform, one being "Report Violation." Clicking on the "Report Violation" link will remove the item and send an email to the offending account that their item was removed by the Brand Protection Manager of "XXXX" company. The email will also provide a link back to your "About Me" profile which should include information on how the seller can contact the brand should they have additional questions.

Step four: Confirm to Bonanzle that you have set up your "About Me" page and provide a contact email that we can forward to those who may have questions about the removal of their items. Additionally please provide us with the user name of each account that you have set up so that we can activate your tools.

As is true for any ecommerce venue, this is a smart move. If a multi-seller venue wants to gain credibility with buyers, sellers and those that create many of the items offered for sale, they must have a program such as this place.

Kudos to Bonanzle for putting this progran in place!

Bonanzle Reaches 200,000 Members - Congratulations!

In less than 18 months out of Beta, Bonanzle has reached the 200,000 member milestone. It all went down just a second ago. And the forum party on the site begins... and rightfully so.

A grassroots, word of mouth promotional campaign has brought the venue to this level, a level many sites have worked a lot of years to attain. Many venues never reach this height. Innovation by the owners, hard work by all involved with the site coupled with buyers and sellers motivated to see the site succeed have been key to their growth.

Bonanzle has given sellers a site to list where they control their own business. Many disgruntled eBay sellers file in each and every time eBay makes an anti-seller change. There are many first time sellers on the site also. Each of these sellers bring an array of interesting items to the site to offer to shoppers.

Bonanzle offers sellers the ability to list up to 10,000 items for FREE with only a small final value fee to pay when an item sells. This has been a major draw for sellers because they risk nothing when listing with the site.

Bill, Mark, Tom, Ghost and all of the Bonanzle administration take a hands on approach to the site. When contacting support, you NEVER get a canned response. It always comes from one of the "boyz", as they are affectionately called by their members. This personal response is a breath of fresh air for those who have sold on other sites. It feels good to know that those behind the scenes take an interest in thier members.

With the way the site has progressed up to this point, it will be interesting to see where the site goes from here.

Congratulations to Bonanzle and all of it's members!!

Bonanzle Spamming Itself - Bad Idea!

Bonanzle has made a change to the "people page" of their site. They have removed the middle section where it automatically showed members who were currently online and you could look up other members. They replaced it with their members current promo feeds to Twitter and Facebook.

Click the graphic to enlarge it.
We have to ask WHY?

Many people used the old page and it was helpful to both buyers and sellers. We used it several times a day, most every day and so did many others.

The way they have set this up, it causes members to spam themselves. It is such a silly idea that it is hard to believe that this is really happening. After all, the site already has a promotion forum right at the top of this same page.

What is really funny is that the promos on the site had gotten so bad that the site administrators put a limit on how many promos a seller could post - 5 in a 3 day period. Now they add this section which allows members unlimited promos.

Some members have noted their concern about their Facebook and Twitter pages being polluted with other Bonanzle members spam and subjecting their families and friends to the same. These members used the Facebook connect link in the top right hand corner of the Bonanzle peopel page which is new and was first offered this morning. We suggest that no one use this link to avoid this issue. Also, these members say that when they log out of Bonanzle, they are automatically logged out of Twitter and Facebook. We don't know much about this as we decided not to participate in the link.

Most people do not like spam. Many people avoid Twitter and Facebook due to the recurring viruses and trojans and the spam. Now, Bonanzle members have it staring them in the face each and every time they go to the people page. Of course, then they get the same, identical spam on their social networking sites.

If spam is truly a useful marketing strategy, then this new section will also give spammers an unfair advantage over other Bonanzle members. Many people do not have time or want to join the social networking sites so this new section puts spammers way ahead of them as far as visibility. It doesn't seem right or fair to not treat all Bonanzle members equally and this new section does not promote member equality. Everyone should have a fair shake at site visibility without having to join other sites to do so.

With all of the things that have needed to be fixed since Bonanzle's beginning and the feature requests for things members have voted on, one would think that the administrators would have better things to do than to send the offsite spam back to their site, much less right in the middle of one of the sites most heavily visited pages.

We understand fully how social networking can help build a business but we seriously question just how much social networking is necessary to do so. The other question is, is Bonanzle a serious selling venue or just a house of chit chat, games and spam?

From what we see, the only thing that makes sense in all of this is that Bonanzle is likely being paid for giving up such a valuable piece of real estate on their site. They are also likely being paid if someone joins Twitter or Facebook through the new links on the site or the new section. There are no other logical reasons for such a ridiculous site change.

As far as we are concerned, this was a very bad move by Bonanzle and it does not reflect well on the site. It has also caused us to put another entry in the cons section of our list of things to consider in continuing our Bonanzle membership.

At the time of this writing, there is a forum thread on this topic that is 11 pages long. Most of the members do not like the new change. We have been patiently waiting for an official site post on the subject but there has been none in just under 7 hours since the thread was created. Click here to read the thread.

UPDATE:
Bonanzle co-founder, Mark Dorsey just responded, a little less than 8 hours since the thread began, on page 13. Mark writes:

"Did you know that Facebook accounts for more than twice the amount of traffic than Google on some major player sites?

With the recent changes at Google we realized that it is best to not put our eggs all in one basket. I would encourage you all to learn about Facebook and how you can utilize this powerful tool to your advantage. This is a very good thing."

Click here to go to that page.

So there you have it, or maybe you don't. It sort of sounds like Bonanzle administration is happy with this change. As for what they think of what their members have to say or if they are even taking it into consideration, well... we will leave that up to your interpretation.
-----
** Special Note:
Sellers should know that they can sell their items on the Facebook Marketplace. In doing so, they are promoting their own brand and products and not just a venue. With this option available through Facebook, we find even more questions about the necessity of the change to the Bonanzle people page. Perhaps they are banking on people not investigating Facebook further to find out they can sell directly there and without Bonanzle? It seems to us that Bonanzle is not needed if a seller intends to use Facebook frequently since they already offer a marketplace. We don't know many that would spend their time promoting on Facebook for a venue that they have to pay any kind of fee to when they can promote themselves and their products and do the selling for free on the Facebook Marketplace.
-----
UPDATE:
Bonanzle founder, Bill Harding has responded to the thread on page 17, about 10 hours after the thread began. Here is what he had to say:

"Hey all,

As is generally the case with Bonanzle changes, we understand it won’t be possible to make everybody happy. But we try.

In regards to regaining the link to see who’s online, that’s definitely something we can & will do. I plan to re-add that to the People page for tomorrow (just got to figure out where). In the meantime, there is a link from the homepage to see “Who’s online.”

As far as whether the list of people is more relevant than the most recent social commentary (and/or whether its “spam”), I suppose that’s always going to be debatable. The way we see it, the list of online users was not adding value in that it was limited (you could only see a very small number of the overall people online) and it duplicated functionality already available on the users page. Therefore, this didn’t seem like the most advantageous use of real estate on the People page.

If you don’t care what people have been Facebooking and Tweeting about, there is no reason for you to scroll down the page and read about it. The luxury of having them lower on the page is that you’ll only encounter them if you scroll down (or look down) to them. That said, we’ll probably still make refinements about what shows up in the list of recent FB & Twitter posts. I think that one helpful change could be to only show each user once in the list, just showing their most recent post/tweet, in cases where one person posts multiple times.

In the future, perhaps we can allow users to customize the look of the People page, such that you can see the panels that are most interesting to you. But that adds complexity in itself, so that might be a bit further down the road.

Also, if you hadn’t noticed, you’re free to hide the Facebook link in the header by clicking on it and choosing “don’t show me this again.”

Hope this helps clear up some of the confusion.
Bill"

-----
We have our own feelings about Bills official post but we will leave you to decide what he is saying beyond - if you don't like the change, don't look at it. What is easy to see, Bonanzle - the site and administration, is happy and it doesn't appear that this big mistake will be rectified soon, if ever.

Someone in the thread said that Bonanzle is a fast moving train. Well, that may be but what adverse effects will they find on this fast track or what is at the end of the tracks because of these kinds of decisions? People who are turned off by all of this will likely not sign up for the site and those that are already members will likely leave. And that member who talked about the train said to get on the train or get left at the station - at least those at the station will have a business plan (and know what it is in advance, not traveling blindly) and are likely not headed for a train wreck (brick wall) or practice unfairness (to get equal exposure on the Bonanzle site, sellers have to join outside social sites and spend hours using them).

Oh, don't forget the old agruement about whether or not buyers come to the people page. When memebers worry about certain things being seen by potential buyers or new sellers, the site always says that buyers rarely visit the page. So then what in the world is the purpose of placing the Twitter and Facebook promotions of Bonanzle items on this heavily visited page? Sellers already see the other promotions and visit each other. They see these promos on their social networking sites. Just what does the site think this is going to do as far as helping sellers complete more sales if the buyers rarely visit this page? It would be nice if they would explain just what the usefulness of the new section is.

Hey, whatever happened to the business of selling?! Sellers need buyers, not self-delivered spam!

We are very disappointed about this change. The time we have spent to set up our Bonanzle booth and all of the promoting we have done has probably been a waste. The reason being, if the site continues in this direction, we will not stay. We have plans and visions for our online selling while at the same time, we expect to be treated fairly. None of these plans or visions ever included what is going on today. We have time left on our paid membership so we will be there until it runs out. That should be enough time for Bonanzle to correct some missteps and an assortment of other unresolved site issues.
If not, adios.

Bonanzle Embraces Goolge Base Changes

Bonanzle founder, Bill Harding states that he is delighted with the Google Base change that allows multi-seller marketplaces to manage the feeds for all of their sellers.

Before this change, Bonanzle sellers had to upload their own feeds to Google Base. While Bonanzle support is / was always available to assist sellers who had trouble following the detailed instructions provided by the site, it was one of the most difficult selling details to deal with for many.

You can read Bill's blog here: http://www.bonanzle.com/blogs/141

Bonanzle Celebrates One Year Since Leaving Beta

Today, Bonanzle celebrates it's first year since leaving beta testing. There are virtual celebrations in the Bonanzle forums and a note on Bill Harding's blog. Bill is the founder of Bonanzle.

Bill starts out his blog with:

Slogan: Real People. Real Deals. Real Time. Can I get a witness? Anyone remember back that far?

We remember that far back. At that time, we were a forum lurker for about a month or 2, trying to decide if we should join Bonanzle. We eventually did sign on, on 09-09-08. The site has really grown and had major changes since then. Bill's blog goes on to note some of the various milestones, most of which we also remember.

The blog also states:

What to expect for year two?

Year one was just a warm up round for what we're planning to bring you this year. We believe that the top reason to make Bonanzle your marketplace home is our commitment to improving faster than a cheetah on ice skates (don't imagine it, just go with your gut here... cheetahs are fast, and anything on ice skates is faster). In the next few weeks, we'll be releasing our Bonanzle API, which will allow third-party developers to create nifty stuff like iPhone apps, desktop software, Facebook apps, or browser plugins that interface with Bonanzle. I believe we will be the first marketplace outside of the Old Guard to offer a full-featured developer API.

After that, we have our sights set on October as the month we will begin development on the next generation of Bonanzle, for hopeful release by late October or early November. Expect to hear more around that time about how we plan to offer buyers an experience worth writing home about.
--

Congratulations Bonanzle!

It will be interesting to see what Bonanzle does in the year ahead.

Bonanzle Turns Up The Heat Vying For Christmas Shoppers

With only four months remaining until Christmas, Bonanzle merchants are turning up the heat in their booths vying for holiday shoppers. Stocking their shelves to the brim with top of the line products, Bonanzle merchants are striving to offer something for everyone, including "everything but the ordinary". Antiques, vintage items, handmade / custom items, unusual attic finds and even some new products are in the line up.

While in the comfort of your own home, 24/7, experience the Bonanzle difference. Grab a cup of coffee or your favorite beverage and browse the wonderful selection of products offered. If you have a question, you can email, Quick Text or live chat with the merchant right in their booth. Bonanzle merchants are a very social bunch so you may also make new friends while doing your Christmas shopping.

Many Bonanzle merchants offer coupons for a percentage off of their everyday low prices to help shoppers stretch their shopping dollars. See an item that you like but would like to get a better deal? Check the listing header for the OBO button (Or Best Offer). Click the OBO button and follow the instructions to send the merchant an offer. Once the merchant gets your offer, they can accept or counter-offer. Many Bonanzle merchants are willing to accept any resonable offer - so go for it! You'll be surprised at the savings!

We took a quick peek around Bonanzle and we found some very interesting Christmas decorations, cards and the like. If you need holiday decor or paper products, you can find them on Bonanzle. Here is a small sample of what we found (the pictures are clickable):

Bill Harding founded Bonanzle which is based in Kirkland, Washington. Previously, Bill was lead developer for five years at Kirkland-based gaming firm Amaze Entertainment. Bonanzle's creation began in January 2007 when Bill decided to create a site where people could sell a lot of items quickly, and give buyers combined offers and better deals while keeping the site as simple as possible.

After a year and a half of development, Bonanzle (Bonanza.com was taken) released a beta site version in June 2008. Bonanzle went public in September 2008. At that time, the site had between 10,000 to 20,000 unique visitors. Bonanzle has experienced explosive growth with the only marketing of the site being word of mouth.

Bill created Bonanzle to be very socially interactive to create an environment where people could talk about what they are buying and selling. Being built around hard-to-find collectibles, the social aspect allows people to share and learn about their special items. Buyers can ask questions or just visit with a merchant through email, Quick Text or live booth chat.

Bonanzle makes a commission of three to five percent on each sold item. They also offer premium subscriptions that allow sellers better placement for their goods on the site. There are no listing fees, no fees to have a booth, no fees to place pictures in a listing or any other fee that sellers have become accustomed to on other sites. Lower selling fees means lower prices for buyers!

Listing on the site is easy. Bonanzle has a cropping tool built in so that sellers can zoom in or out on their product pictures to fit the listing. Below is a video of how to list products but there has been an upgrade since the video. Sellers now add traits to their items while creating the listing.

Sellers can offer several payment options including PayPal, Google Checkout, Checks, Money Orders, RME and etc..

On July 22, 2009, Bonanzle introduced their affiliate and syndicated seller program. From Bonanzle's Blog:

Here are some more Q&A details about the Syndicated Seller and Bonanzle Affiliates program.

What's the difference between a "Syndicated Seller" and a "Bonanzle Affiliate?" A "Syndicated Seller" is a Bonanzle seller who has signed up to offer referral fees when their items sell to a buyer who was referred via a Bonanzle Affiliate. A "Bonanzle Affiliate" is a web site or blog that has signed up to receive commissions when they refer paying buyers to Bonanzle items. You can sign up as a Syndicated Seller here or as a Bonanzle Affiliate here.

Can a Syndicated Seller also be a Bonanzle Affiliate? Technically, yes, but do you really want to pay commission fees to yourself? The only circumstances under which you, as a seller, would benefit from being a Bonanzle Affiliate is if you have a web site and you plan to refer your visitors to the items of other Bonanzle sellers. If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, you can sign up at our Affiliates site.

Does the Bonanzle Affiliates Program affect anything about my shopping experience on Bonanzle? No. Whether you are a Syndicated Seller or not has no bearing on search results or any aspect of the experience people will have when they're shopping at your Bonanzle store. The only difference is that our affiliates will send more buyers directly to your items.

When I sign up as a Syndicated Seller, how many more sales will I make? At first, probably not very many, because it will take time for us to build our network of Affiliate Partners. But in the long run, depending on what you offer as a referral fee, the sky's the limit for how this might affect your buyer traffic.

I Have More Questions. What Do I Do? Try reading our Syndicated Seller FAQ.

There is a total of 2,229,046 items listed on Bonanzle.

Bonanzle Bargaineer - Bonanzle's New Newsletter

We went to our email inbox on Thursday and found a wonderful surprise. Lo and behold, there was email from Bonanzle, the contents of which was Bonanzle's very first newsletter. WooHoo!

There was a nice opening note from the editor, Arlene. Arlene is also known on Bonanzle as PassionFuel. You can also find Arlene on Bonanzle at her new newsletter ID, Bargaineer.

The newsletter contains interesting information for both buyers and sellers. It even has a section called Calendar Curiosities with dates of various items of interest. Looking further we found it also included a featured unique item section. There are also other miscellaneous sections that offer a little something for everyone.

Great job Arlene, we can hardly wait for the next issue to come out!
